About Payment & Letters of Credit
Whether you import goods from China, Taiwan or elsewhere, buying goods from overseas could have risks and pitfalls. We know of some small businessmen who import from Europe that actually travel there every time they order to pack up and ship everything themselves. This is an extreme precaution that is unnecessary. Letters of Credit have been invented by the banking system to ensure safe import transactions. How safe is a letter of credit, however? A letter of credit is a guarantee issued by a bank that when the goods ordered are shipped by the supplier the bank will forward payment to the supplier in accordance with international banking protocols. What most importers don’t realize is the fact that the buyer’s bank does not see what is shipped. The bank only sees the invoices and shipping documents. What’s missing here is inspection by an impartial party that the shipment is correct. What if you haven’t received what you ordered and your bank has already paid for it under the terms of a “documentary” letter of credit? That can be a real problem and, unfortunately, the world of import and export occasionally exposes importers to problems of this sort.
